"During the 4th quarter of 1992, I came to Dallas to prepare for my relocation from London, England to Dallas, Texas. My plan was to find some temporary housing for my wife and myself, while we get an understanding of the housing market in the greater Dallas area.
One day, on my way from Dallas to Plano via Preston Road, I spotted the office of Ebby Halliday and stopped in to seek help in finding a quality, temporary apartment. Not being too experienced in dealing with realtors, I told the receptionist that I was looking for a quality apartment to rent for a period of one to three months. Apparantly, the way Ebby was organized in those days, they had one or two agents sitting up front to handle walk ins, such as myself.
Poor Paulette; it was her turn to be on point and I walk in as looking for an apartment - a $50 commission opportunity. To my surprise and relief, the enthusiasm and energy she put into finding us an apartment was incredible.
I did tell her that it was our plan to purchase a home somewhere and that Sandi, who was still in London, would be part of that process. I couldn't guarantee to Paulette that she would be our agent in that process as Sandi would have to be comfortable with the agent who we would work with. Her committment to me, despite only being eligible for a $50 commission, won me over.
When my wife Sandi came to town, we arranged for Paulette to show us a few houses so that Sandi could "check her out". That same enthusiasm and energy she showed me looking for an apartment was there during this mini tour. Sandi and I both wanted her to represent us which she did. We found a wonderful home. My assignment in my company was to build a consulting function from the ground up. We brought a lot of people to Dallas to be part of our company. It was a slam dunk for me to recommend Paulette to each of these many new executives we brought on board. The rest is history - ten years + of success.
Looking back, some might call Paulette lucky, some might argue it was fate, but to me you can always tell luck from ability by its duration. Paulette exemplified one of our family's favorite words of wisdom: Just over the hill is a beautiful valley, but you must climb the hill to see it."
